StraitsX says 85% of stablecoin card transactions are below $50

CEO Tianwei Liu says StraitsX processes more than $500 million in card payments monthly, with most transactions covering everyday purchases rather than high-value crypto spending.

Stablecoin-backed cards are primarily being used for small, everyday purchases, according to new figures shared by StraitsX co-founder and CEO Tianwei Liu.

In an interview with NYSE at Money 20/20 USA, published via Yahoo Finance on October 28, Liu said 85% of StraitsX card transactions are below $50. He cited groceries and diapers as examples of the spending supported by the company's stablecoin-backed Visa debit card infrastructure.

Liu said StraitsX processes more than $500 million in card payments each month and approximately eight million transactions monthly. He projected that annual transaction value could approach $6 billion to $7 billion this year. These figures describe the payment volume handled through StraitsX-supported programs, not balances held in its stablecoins.

The Singapore-based payment infrastructure company issues the Singapore-dollar-backed XSGD and US-dollar-backed XUSD stablecoins. Liu said its card-issuing infrastructure supports programs including OKX and Binance, giving cardholders access to Visa's merchant network.

He framed demand outside the United States as demand for accessible dollar exposure as well as payment functionality. According to Liu, users in emerging markets can complete identity checks, obtain dollar-linked stablecoins and connect them to a card for routine spending and a potential hedge against local-currency inflation.

The interview also highlighted StraitsX's use of alternative payment form factors: Liu demonstrated an NFC ring that he uses instead of a physical card at contactless terminals. No new card launch, fee change or change to eligibility was announced in the interview.
